OIC OF WILSON: THE QUIET SUCCESS
From humble beginnings in a one-room office in an old hospital, OIC Wilson has grown steadily since its founding in 1972. Our current facility is the fourth home we have occupied as we have greatly expanded services over the years. Within the walls and on the grounds on this five-acre site, hundreds of unemployed and underemployed
Wilsonians are trained and retained for the global workforce. Moreover, they are preparing for self-sufficiency. Like that of the thousands of OIC participants who have already started new careers, theirs will be a quiet success. No headlines will note their absence from the welfare rolls, their first day on the job, or even the promotions that some will get years later. Information about OIC travels largely by word of mouth. OIC staff moves throughout the community outreaching, recruiting and encouraging.
OIC and its varied programs were once a well-kept secret, indistinguishable in the public eye from other community service agencies and social organizations. Some people think OIC is an outreach ministry of the church, and others think OIC is an affiliate of the Employment Security Commission, Wilson Community College, Wilson Public Schools or the Department of Social Services.
Still others think of OIC as the place for food assistance, testing for health issues, job training and retraining, youth activities, education for life, and finding people jobs. In truth, OIC is at once none of these things and all of the things… and more. Key to OIC success is the wide and varied partnerships with governments (federal, state, local), businesses, industries and educational institutions. All of these entities
respect and understand the role OIC plays in helping people obtain training, education, employment, health and nutrition services - leading to a life of productivity and self-sufficiency. To the thousands of families for whom OIC has made a positive difference, OIC is the place to get help, to rebuild hope, to believe in change, and to see change manifested. OIC is a valued community resource…”Helping People To Help Themselves”.
